Synopsis

Eric Dawson walks into Maple Valley High School looking like just another new transfer, and that's exactly the problem. Nobody at the school has any idea that the quiet kid they've already written off as broke and forgettable actually owns nearly every luxury label worth mentioning. Eric built that empire himself after discovering he was born with a rare kind of vision, the ability to see straight through walls, bags, and people's excuses. He didn't come to Maple Valley to show off his fortune. He came because his long-distance girlfriend Katie goes there, and he wanted to surprise her by finally showing up in person before revealing who he really is.

The surprise goes sideways fast. At a welcome party thrown for campus royalty Liv Sparks, Eric gets mistaken for a nobody, mocked for the luxury bag he's carrying (which isn't even his), and humiliated in front of a crowd that includes his own girlfriend. Katie doesn't defend him. Worse, she's already moved on with Miles Pickett, the guy leading the mockery, and she makes the breakup public before Eric can even process what's happening to his own relationship.

The real tension isn't really about Katie anymore, though. It's about how thoroughly the school has misjudged Eric, and how much power that misjudgment hands to people like Miles, who thrive on making other students feel small in front of an audience. Liv Sparks, despite being the most followed teenager on the planet with hundreds of millions of fans across social platforms, is dealing with her own version of that pressure. She hired a fake boyfriend to keep her public image intact, and when her team botches the hire, Eric ends up filling that role almost by accident.

What makes their arrangement land differently than the usual fake-dating setup is that neither of them is performing for the same reason. Liv needs the appearance of stability because her entire career runs on how she's perceived online. Eric, meanwhile, has just watched his real relationship collapse in front of an audience, and agreeing to fake one with the school's most scrutinized girl means walking straight back into the kind of public exposure he was trying to avoid. Their chemistry builds inside that contradiction, two people managing image while quietly discovering something that isn't an act.

The series earns its hook honestly. Eric's X-ray vision isn't just a party trick for embarrassing bullies, though it does plenty of that when he spots a health threat inside Liv's throat before anyone else notices and gets brushed off as paranoid for trying to warn her. The power works better as a device for revealing what's underneath appearances generally, matching a story that's fundamentally about characters being misread by everyone around them. That thematic pairing of literal and social x-ray vision is sharper than most powers-based hooks in the genre manage.

As a vertical short, the format serves this particular plot well. Each episode is built around a reversal, someone gets underestimated, then overturns that read within minutes, which suits a story about hidden identities stacking on top of each other. ReelShort has leaned into romance-fantasy hybrids with wish-fulfillment cores before, and this entry fits that lane while giving its leads enough friction and stakes that the fantasy elements don't do all the emotional work by themselves.
